Positive Psychology Can Change a Life
Positive psychology is a holistic approach to mental health and personal wellness in relation to happiness. Keep in mind that happiness is understandable, teachable and attainable for any individual that is open to change in their life. One of the greatest thinkers in the history of western science and philosophy, Aristotle, said it best when he stated “Happiness depends on ourselves” because he saw happiness as a goal or central drive in one’s life. The follow are a few ways to get you one step closer to that life fulfillment of happiness:
- Organization: Take the initiative to clear the clutter out of your life not only psychically but emotionally. Having a clean working space will allow you to focus on the task at hand and from there you can tackle preparation to make your life easier by creating monthly financial budgets, work & personal calendars, and a list of goals that you wish to achieve according to a structured timeline.
- Track your ARK (Acts of Random Kindness): Remember that kindness/ happiness is contagious, so by doing the smallest act of kindness on a random basis, you can walk away with a sense of fulfillment. Example: If you are at a drive through service, then leave your change to put towards the purchase of the next customers order. These acts do not have to be of large monetary value, because it will be the action that will leave a contagious feeling of continuing the chain of kindness throughout the day.
- Surround yourself with the Three P’s (Plants, Photos & Pets): The three P’s have been medically linked to improving individuals overall mood and physical wellness (blood pressure stabilization). Plants have been proven to reduce stress, fight colds and remove indoor pollen. Photos are visual reminders of the places that we have been and the memories that have shaped our lives, so keeping photos allow our minds to process the drive to continue down the road towards happiness. Pets are an excellent social support by making one appear more approachable and stress relief because they encourage you to get out and exercise.
- Exercise on a daily basis: Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that can leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Exercise will lead you to feel better about your appearance, boost your energy, allow for better sleep patterns and help with weight maintenance or loss. Weight loss boosts good cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides, so by being active one can get one step closer to that goal of overall happiness.
These are just a few ways to change your life routine to recognize the importance of happiness and fulfillment for true mental health and maximum human potential.
