Targeted radiation helps relieve OCD symptoms

According to a study published in the January issue of Neurosurgery, targeted radiation dramatically reduced symptoms in patients with severe OCD. Specifically, targeting the brain’s anterior capsule with precise, high-intensity radiation reduced objective symptom scores in three patients from 29% to 79%. The anterior capsulotomy, performed with a gamma knife, “…can provide benefit in patients with extreme obsessive compulsive disorder, including improvements in social and thought behaviors as well as in physical manifestations of the disease,” Kondziolka and co-authors reported. However, the authors also mentioned that while radiation therapy has proven beneficial there are potential drawbacks as well.
