What It Is Like Raising a Daughter With Schizophrenia
Being the parent of a child with mental illness can be a painful, confusing, and terrifying journey. Michael Schofield and his wife Susan know first hand. Their daughter, Janni, has led the Schofield family through a rollercoaster. Before she was a year old, Janni appeared to be incredibly talented, nearly a prodigy. But, it soon became clear that Janni’s brilliance was masking a much deeper issue. It would take six years to be diagnosed, but Janni suffered from childhood schizophrenia.
Michael Schofield has written extensively on his experience raising Janni, attempting to support schizophrenia awareness and education, and how it has shaped his own life. He summarized the experience in an article for the Sydney Morning Herald, and at more length in his book January First: A Child’s Descent into Madness and Her Father’s Struggle to Save Her. He has even done an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit, where users were able to directly question Schofield and gain more insight.
