The Weight is Lifted
September 24-28th has been identified by the Binge Eating Disorder Association as National Weight Stigma Awareness Week. Dieting and trying to control one’s weight is an issue that some individuals face with the passing of everyday, so this week is dedicated to those whom struggle with any negative body images and encourages them to lift the burden of weight off their shoulders and accept their external beauty in every form.
All individuals were created with their own identity and physical attributes and this week should be one of celebration for uniqueness around the globe. Unfortunately, weight stigma and eating disorders are heavily linked for many individuals; By increasing awareness throughout society, the emotional and physical burden can be explored and the shame can be lifted for these individuals. BEDA is hosting a free webinar on Weight Stigma and Eating Disorders on Thursday, September 27th from 6-7:30pm EST. Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt will lead the seminar and special guest Stacy Sargeant, artist and film maker of “Though I’m Not Perfect” will share her story of weight stigma and recovery. Stereotyping for individuals ailed by weightism reduces one’s quality of life and has both immediate and long-term consequences for their emotional and physical health. If you or someone you know is struggling with these issues, show your support by lifting them up in their own personal splendor this week and encourage them for their daily strides towards becoming their greatest self!
