Simple device can prevent deaths from opiate overdoses
The overwhelming increase in heroin and prescription opiate abuse has increased the death rate from drug overdose. Used like an EpiPen the device, called Evzio, contains the drug Naloxone and can reverse the effects of an overdose. Recently approved by the FDA, there is now a tool which can be used in emergency situations, perhaps even before emergency medical personnel can arrive.
Critics have argued against allowing this technique to administer Naloxone, but the potential to save lives certainly outweighs the criticism. Evzio won’t stop addiction, but it can give a person a chance at addiction recovery which they wouldn’t have had. We can’t turn a blind eye to the problem and the lives of people affected by burgeoning heroin use. We need to make use of every tool to address the problem and save lives. Who knows, perhaps the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman could have been avoided.
