Riverdale star Camila Mendes shares how eating disorders have affected her family
A star of the Archie Comics-inspired TV show Riverdale is partnering with Project HEAL to raise money and awareness for an issue that has affected her throughout her life.
Camila Mendes, who plays the mysterious Veronica Lodge, revealed that eating disorders have been an issue in her family since she was young. Her sister suffered with an eating disorder for years during her earlier years, and she has experienced symptoms of disordered eating herself.
“Could not be happier about my decision to get involved with Project HEAL,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I can say from experience that eating disorders are serious mental illnesses. Growing up, I watched my big sister suffer from one for many years, and I’ve experienced periods of my life when I’ve suffered symptoms as well.”
While just speaking out about her experience with eating disorders can have a significant impact in making it more acceptable for those who are living with one to speak out, Mendes is going even further by actively raising money for Project Heal.
At the upcoming Project HEAL San Francisco Gala, Mendes will be auctioning off a visit to the Riverdale set with all money going to help those with eating disorders afford treatment.
Project HEAL is a nonprofit dedicated to assisting those living with eating disorders in accessing treatment and transitioning to a post-recovery life. Along with helping pay for treatment, they provide many resources to help cope with the lasting effects of an eating disorder and body image issues.
