Eating Disorders Can Get In The Way Of Motherhood


There’s no good time to be struggling with an eating disorder in your life. Whether it is during the emotion-filled teenage years or the stressful years of adulthood, eating disorders can complicate your life, defer goals, and be literally debilitating.

However, there’s one period of life where struggling with an eating disorder can be particularly difficult. Women trying to get pregnant or raise a child can be particularly at risk for dangerous eating disorder behaviors which can, in turn, put a child’s life at risk along with the mother’s.

Linda Shanti McCabe, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist, recently wrote about the unique hurdles and issues that pregnant women with eating disorders or those who recently gave birth.

Between the hormone changes, body changes, and complete change in lifestyle, this group of women is at huge risk during a very vulnerable time for both them and their child. However, they are also frequently overlooked since most are not in the age range most frequently associated with eating disorders.
