Diabulimia: When Diabetes Leads To An Eating Disorder
The fact that eating disorders are associated with a wealth of severe health problems and diseases is well known. In most cases, the eating disorder contributes to the other health issues. What most people don’t know is that some diseases can feed into eating disorders.
That is the case with what some are calling “diabulimia,” a condition where diabetes can feed into an eating disorder.
The Telegraph recently explored how a relatively common disease such as diabetes can lead to a severe eating disorder by telling the story of a young woman named Lisa Day who was diagnosed with diabetes when she was just 14.
“The two basically came hand-in-hand,” says her sister Katie Edwards, now 31. “Lisa lost a lot of weight. As a diabetic she had to look really closely at what she ate, but because of her eating disorder, she looked way too much – and became obsessed.”
