Who is Qualified to Prescribe Psychotropic Medication?
There’s quite the debate raging in New Jersey. On one side, psychologists who believe the needs of those suffering from mental illness are not and cannot be met under the current laws and practices. On the other, psychiatrists who fear for their patients safety and well-being.
To clarify, a bill in the New Jersey Legislature would allow psychologists the ability to prescribe psychotropic medications. Psychiatrists believe more extensive training is required to prescribe medications. It’s a nuanced and complex issue where both sides are working for what they believe to be the public’s best interest.
Psychologists would be required to obtain a master’s degree in psychopharmacology before prescribing medications, such as antidepressants. Still, that education is a far cry from the level obtained by psychiatrists.
