The 2012 National Zarrow Mental Health Symposium Grows from a Regional to a National Conference
For 2012, The Mental Health Association of Tulsa and Mental Health America are co-hosting the annual Zarrow Symposium & Mental Health America conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This year’s theme is “From Housing to Recovery” and will discuss innovative approaches to bridge the many gaps that exist for an individual living with a mental illness. The event will be taking place September 19th– 21st at the award-winning Tulsa Convention Center and will also offer The Clifford Beers Awards Dinner being held Thursday, September 20th with a keynote address from mental health advocate, Jessie Close, sister of the actress, Glenn Close. The event also brings Dr. Mark Vonnegut, author, pediatrician and son of author Kurt Vonnegut, who will be addressing his personal battle with Bipolar Disorder in one of the keynote events.
Brookhaven Hospital is being featured as one of the premier sponsors this year; as well as, two of our key staff, Ron Broughton, M.Ed., LPC and Jeff Riggenbach, Ph.D., LPC, will be presenting at breakout session IV from 2:00-3:20pm on Evidence Based treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder and Psychosis. Ron Broughton, M.Ed., LPC Chief Clinical Officer at Brookhaven and Jeff Riggenbach, Ph.D., LPC Outpatient Services Director at Brookhaven will present on Psychosis: Counseling the Hallucinating or Delusional Client. The presentation will review diagnosis’ that have psychosis as a part of the client’s presentation and present effective ways to adequately treat patients as well as lower costs; emphasizing cognitive therapy (CT) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). It will review current medication intervention and offer practical, research-based guidelines for professionals who work with these individuals. Ultimately, this presentation conveys practical treatment information that is useful for physicians, socials workers, counselors, case managers, nurses and consumers.
