Anorexia Also Being Mistreated With Antipsychotics

In a recent article, I told you about children being prescribed powerful antipsychotics off-label. Similarly, Catherine Pearson writes for the Huffington Post┬áthat antipsychotics and antidepressants are being widely used to treat anorexia, despite their being no evidence have a positive impact on a patient’s symptoms.

Though there have been preliminary trials conducted that show weight gain in patients using an antipsychotic, similar results were reached through the use of a placebo. Anorexia does share many traits of other psychiatric illnesses, which would suggest there is some reason to doctors attempts to treat it using drugs for other illnesses. However, these drugs have not been shown to be effective.
